Poundland summer shopping bag

  • Christy Guan

One of the two winners of Poundland's 2014 design brief. The design was produced and sold in over 500 Poundland stores across the UK in summer 2015, targeting over 5 million customers. The brief was launched to encourage shoppers to purchase reusable bags. Poundland approached the University of Wolverhampton for a "bright and colourful" summer design. "The design needs to have a universal appeal to attract all age demographics, both male and female."

My design was a mix of picnic and seaside motifs, in hand-drawn watercolour style to stand out from the crowd of existing shopping bags on the market. Shoppers would use it for more than just Poundland shopping trips and carry the Poundland identity everywhere with them.

Yellow is an effective colour that reminds everyone of the sun (especially when we don’t get it very often here in the UK). I wanted the bag to keep their mood bright and sunny. The traditional table and picnic cloth inspired gingham background was also drawn by hand before it was made into a repeating pattern.

The bag design was finalised at the Poundland office with the design team.
