Primitive Instincts

  • Naomi McGuire

How can we use biophilic design to promote a connection between humans and nature through the rekindling of our primitive instincts? In the format of three journalistic articles, Primitive Instincts discusses our relationship and proximity to one another and nature, how we can amplify these connections and how design might just save us - literally. Through psychological analysis of our aesthetic preferences, spatial attitudes and political systems, the three articles discuss our innate connection to nature in both its subtleties and clarity. The three articles are loosely based on the themes of past, present, and future, as well as aesthetics, function, and materiality. Whilst each essay ponders problematic political issues, the publication aims to be hopeful and spark inspiration in its reader whilst staying accessible to a variety of design-orientated audiences through comparison of design studies both large and small-scale.
