Current electricity habits are extremely wasteful as users do not consider the effect of their use on household energy bills. Research into human behaviour in the home has shown an exponential increase in the amount of wasted electricity, resulting from numerous places. Generational disconnects between the cost and impact of electricity usage, appliance standby modes and careless occupancy behaviour all contribute. Occupants who do not pay the bills are considerably more wasteful than those who do and current domestic electricity interfaces do very little to alert them to the amount of energy they are using and wasting. Behavioural observations in multiple, different home environments indicated a lack of conscious recognition of the on and off state of the light at all times of day, particularly at dawn and dusk. The LUX Psychological Light Switch aims to create a more conscious relationship between light, switch and user. The form of the switch provides a reminder to the lights on state and nurtures better energy consumption habits, reducing the number of light-left-on instances.
