Quasi

The subjects of the Quasi Project (i.e. Almost) are dogs whose physical appearance is clearly unusual. They are deemed “almost dogs” because something is missing from them, e.g., the stereotypical canine aesthetic.
“Progetto Quasi” (Almost Project) is a voluntary organization which collects the less fortunate dogs off the streets and from the shelters to give them a second chance for a better life and find them a new home. During their rehabilitation the pets live at the volunteers’ homes or stay in veterinarian clinics when a check-up is needed.
I collaborated with the association to find unusual and problematic dogs to portrait in order to clearly reveal what makes them different from most of those we are used to seeing. My intention was to catch the expressions and behavior which could better show what makes each of them unique.
Moreover, the purpose of the project is to show how these physical complications are not a problem in the animal world, as the dogs themselves are unaware of their own abnormalities.
The aim was to portrait them as purebred dogs and to show the normality behind their curious appearance through studio portraits, which are usually related to the common idea of ‘beauty’.
Ultimately, I want to bring the viewer to look at them as ordinary dogs, even if their peculiarities are boldly clear.
"Quasi" is also a book where these dogs' stories are told.
It is available for 10£. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the association.
