I directed and produced my first short film titled "Race Jones". It was a contemporary dance film inspired by the music made by Veronika Bozeman under the same title. It was an emotive piece showing the female leads struggle to see herself as a beautiful dark skinned black women with the standards of Eurocentric beauty constantly being praised. I visually represented this struggle by having the dancer move with a black smoke grenade in erratic movements. The black smoke representing the very essence of what it means to be black and proud and her movements suggesting the latter and showing how she wasn't ready to accept it yet. By the end of the piece the viewer in time with the music can see her journey of eventual acceptance which I also demonstrated through the introduction of gradual colour grading and colourful smoke grenades being used.
