Rebellious Crochet

  • Zohrah Sara Khan

This project is a small act of rebellion against society’s views of body hair on women. Rebellious Crochet advocates for realness. It presents a collection of unconventional crochet pieces — underwear featuring fur on armpits and private parts. The goal of this collection is to challenge societal norms and expectations around body hair on women and to encourage women to embrace their bodies as they are.

Billboard advertisements that showcase my photographs in the street. These advertisements have been titled 'Embracing Freedom', to represent being able to let go of society's idea of the ideal feminine:
Advocating for women, and working in the direction of reversing the way that society has been wired to think about body hair. The intention behind this project is to normalise realness, and to support destroying the feminine beauty ideal.

Body hair is normal. It exists to keep us safe. But why is hair treated as something ghastly when found on a woman’s body?

Rebellious Crochet consists of panties and vests that make a statement about being proud of body hair. By placing patches of brown fur in areas where body hair naturally resides, and publicly advertising these outcomes being worn by natural models on billboards; this project rebels against the existing beauty standards for women by putting a twist on what is consumed by the public.
