Filmmaker and Musician Griff Lynch visualizes Poet Emyr Lewis’s ‘Rhyddid’, whose work was awarded the Crown at the Welsh National Eisteddfod in 1998, which lyrically meditates on the charm of a city caught between stillness and the passage of time. Here, Griff talks about his contemplative work:
"As a Welsh filmmaker and Cardiff dweller, I’ve wanted to do something with this particular piece ever since I heard extracts read by John Cale on his Welsh homecoming film Beautiful Mistake. I wanted to emphasize those familiar Cardiff moments, paused on tape and held there forever.
"Cardiff’s personal belongings, broken clocks, and its unbreakable charm all come together through an untidy stumble of a tape, which manages to capture the essence of the city, caught between a lazy Sunday afternoon and Cardiff's history."
Rhyddid is a first in a series developed with Hansh, for Welsh broadcasters S4C, with the intent to reach a new audience for Welsh language Poetry.
