In response to ISTD: Eye Witness. On June 5th 2013, Edward Snowden along with the help of journalists leaked classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA) & Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).
Room. 52479 was set up with the intent to communicate the direct experience of this significant event, however, simplifying it and making it more interactive so that the vast amounts of data and information become more accessible and digestible. The paranoia, suspense and shocking revelations created a disturbing and awkward atmosphere which put into perspective the extent at which we are being surveilled as a society. The room intended to replicate these attributes but to also enforce the feeling that you are being watched and recorded, invading the participants privacy and putting the power in their hands.
