Rolling Shutter: The Drone Mapping Problem No One’s Talking About

Software features aren't always easy to sell, especially when they address a highly technical problem that most clients aren't even aware of. Yet, there comes a time when these features are worth talking about. This project aimed to explain and "sell" an algorithm that reduced image distortion in the process of drone mapping. From white paper to the masses: complete with gifs, carefully placed words (to ensure technical accuracy), and comprehensibility.
When image-mapping with drones, having a rolling shutter camera can affect your mapping accuracy. Global and rolling shutters have different ways of exposing the camera sensor to light in order to register an image. If you add the traveling speed of a drone to the equation, you get distortion.
I needed to find a creative, yet accurate, analogy to visualize this problem:
