Royal London Hospital REBOA Pre-Hospital Medical Device

  • Toby Webber

This open-brief project was developed through collaboration with the London Air Ambulance (LAA) paramedic team at The Royal London Hospital. The project concerns the Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) procedure, a complex multi-stage process preventing excessive blood loss from pelvic haemorrhages. Traditionally, REBOA is practised in the operating theatre, but as recently as 2014, The Royal London Hospital has pioneered the procedure for pre-hospital care. This new context environment renders much of the REBOA equipment unsuitable for use. The device is therefore designed to make existing equipment fit-for-purpose by adopting a user-centred design approach.
