'Ryosai Kenbo' Sukeban Feature

In the series me and Izumi Miyazaki explore feminism respectively from both a Japanese and Western perspective by taking photos of each other. We took the concept of ‘Ryosai Kenbo’, a term derived from an idealised traditional role for Japanese women which translates as ‘Good Wife, Wise Mother or Wise Wife, Good Mother’ which we felt equated to the term ‘women belong in the kitchen’ in western culture. Being photographers, neither of us resonate with those concepts in terms of identity and womanhood, so we took a satirical and surreal approach exploring those concepts through images.
