Same As You - spoken word

Grateful and privileged that this short film in collaboration with Yazzie Min was one of the winners of the Asian Film Festival 2021. Supported using public funding by Art Council England and also supported by Tongues of Fire, UK Asian Film Festival. A short film capturing a spoken word performance by Yazzie Min. Yazzie wrote the poem called “Brown Women in White Worlds” to speak to the unspoken barriers that exist between women in the South Asian diaspora. This piece was written to break down those barriers and serve as a reminder of the wider family that we are all part of; that we are all sisters from our motherland, living in another land; that this should unite us, that we hold with pride. Assimilation to whiteness is something that permeates the Asian diaspora and invisibly gives rise to the more hostile energy that can exist between us. Brown Women in White Worlds highlights a sense of shared experiences, heritage and natural connection. It is an ode to all that we really are underneath and provides the hope and encouragement of what we can get back to and reclaim the joy of belonging to each other.
