Santa Carta

  • Marta Russo

In my last project called Santa Carta (which in Italian means Holy Paper), I make sacred papier-mâché hearts, I paint them or cover them with vintage or artisanal or common paper. Each heart is unique in shape and look. The idea is to give a second artistic life to this waste material. To build the structure of the heart I use recycled cardboard from old boxes and the crumpled paper that Amazon uses to fill its packages. As decoration I love to use decoration painted by me mixed with paper wrapping from daily paper I find in shops, markets, the everyday popular graphic design we use and throw away. I’ve chosen the heart as a representation of universal love and emotion, a direct and immediate symbol that communicates directly to the people, no matter what the language. I’ve started this project for me, because I wanted to go back to work with my hands to create symbolic objects from a wonderful and common material like paper.
