Scenic Art: Hamlet

  • Harriet Gillett
I assisted Emeline Beroud in the set building and painting for the Another Way Theatre production of Hamlet. Working to a very low budget, we made an set which could adapt to being used in the play's two very different spaces- the Mitre Theatre in London' Proscenium stage and the outdoor cliffside Minack theatre in Cornwall. The key pieces centred around stage boxes and curtains painted with the outlines of Danish and British maps to indicate the travel which happes throughout the play, and a large clock in the backdrop to visualise the play's pervading idea of fate. Emeline's set aimed to create a sense of old worldliness, to contrast and complement the modern costume tropes.
