Sculpting a Goddess

Sculpting a Goddess (2022) modernizes the ideology of Greek goddesses. Typically, goddesses are presented as tall, thin, angular women in art and literature. The portrait- based project explores artworks primarily from the neoclassical period based on Greek myths and re-enacts the personas of the goddesses. Using ‘ordinary’ women from diverse backgrounds and with different body types, the project challenges the usual portrayal of the ‘goddesses.’ The project aims to challenge each individual artwork and myth by taking the poses that are usually looking away from any male in the painting/sculpture or away from the artist and making the model look straight into the camera. The project allows the women/goddesses to take back their stories rather than being the damsel in distress. http://jlcphotograph.co.uk/sculpting-a-goddess-2022/
