SESSILITY

Short film, 2020 Sessility is the biological property of organisms which are not able to move themselves, depending instead on external forces, such as wind and water currents before permanently attaching themselves to surfaces and other creatures. Jewellery is similar to those organisms in some ways: being a separate entity, it requires a person to wear it in order to exist and to operate. There are several functions that define jewellery: to adorn, to mark the exceptional status, to introduce unique aesthetics into the image of the bearer. Pieces of jewellery interact with each other, add to each other, and create environment of power and abundance. Like coral reefs or barnacle colonies, jewellery creates a mass of interconnected units that operate as a whole, constituting a sensual microcosm. Human's image is never complete, it is always transformed and is always performative. Like the bottom of the sea it is in a state of constant flux. There is an ingrained paradox here: the image is always dynamic, but perceived by external viewers as stable and given. Poetic images of stormy sea demonstrate that: it is a classic romantic picture that is never the same. It is almost impossible to fully control the process. Jewellery becomes a creative tool to construct one's identity and simultaneously a precious point of reference. Moving image is a perfect medium to reflect on that: it imitates life in its dynamics and therefore can reveal some hidden features of jewellery and revel on unusual comparisons between the luxurious world of fashion and mysterious sea life.
