Shakespeare's Globe games

To play, or not to play, that is the question.

I’ve always been fascinated by William Shakespeare and I learned a bit more about some of his famous playwrights whilst working on the games for the 450th anniversary of his birth. These games were based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest. Each game features a selection of the Shakespeare’s Globe cast of mascots, with the user playing one of them in each game.

I created something different and set the games behind the scenes of the Shakespeare’s Globe. The mascots explored the locations looking for props, rehearsing the scenes or casting the perfect actor for the plays. The level design was shaped around the theatre’s style by integrating textures that resemble wood, textiles and marbles. To strengthen the link with the Shakespeare’s Globe, I decided to incorporate some photos of the real props in the background or as decorations.
The design of each game was based on a well thought structure. Below you can see the actions sequence for the Costume Collector game. The wireframe helped me to define the position, the distance and the size of every single element on the screen.

The games were a great success and won several awards, including the New Media Awards, Arts and Culture (Best in Industry) and Web Awards (Education Standard of Excellence and Non-Profit Standard of Excellence).
