“A zine (short for magazine or fanzine) is most commonly a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are produced in editions of fewer than 100. The primary intent of the publication is to advance the views of the editor. Zines have served as a significant medium of communication in various subcultures and frequently draw inspiration from a "do-it-yourself" philosophy. Originally appearing in the 1970s as the rise of Punk spawned a new interest in self-publishing, zines were used to promote the music and art scene to a close-knit readership. They were customized and handmade using collage and glue, hand-typed using a typewriter and photocopied for circulation.
