Sky - The Midwich Cuckoos

  • Charles Bignell

Midwich is a quiet commuter town where nothing much happens. That is, until the twilight hours of a late summer’s day, when everyone within a set area of the town falls unconscious. The curious incident seems temporary and those affected regain consciousness, but every woman of child-bearing age inside the zone has suddenly and inexplicably fallen pregnant. As the children of the phenomenon grow, it becomes clear they are not of this world.

Lenticular

In addition to the traditional 48 sheet and 6 sheet OOH formats, we pushed the bus t-side deliverables, to include dual panel lenticular t-sides. Typically, the central vertical panel is the section of the t-side which animates as part of a lenticular, but given the composition of the key art, we took it a step further, and animated both panels either side of the central.

Digital OOH Hijacks

To develop the visual thread of the cuckoos causing disruption beyond Midwich, we also pushed the digital OOH placements. Using glitch transitions, we showed the Cuckoos disrupting what initially looks like a perfectly normal Sky Mobile ad. Taking Sky’s already existing campaign assets, and disrupting them elsewhere was also a first.

Special Build

The Westfield special build was created to replicate the middle England village environment, in the heart of one of the UK’s biggest shopping centres. By doing this, we had the cuckoos escaping from the billboard, and consequently causing a milk float to veer off the road and crash in front of them. The milk float featured it’s own branding of ‘Midwich Dairies’, along with scattered crates and smashed milk cartons. This all linked to the show through a cuckoo climbing out of the billboard down a ladder.
