SkyCity Theatre interior refurb

  • Stef Gough

SkyCity Theatre interior refurb was about creating a modern, eclectic space that patrons want to spend time and bringing the backstage authentic 'theatre' feeling to the foreground. The project was a quick turnaround on a small budget, so making big impact changes with relatively 'easy' updates was key. We managed to complete the project with some coats of paint which made a massive impact, all new furniture (free!) and our pièce de résistance - our feature gallery wall of SkyCity Theatre shows from the last 25 years. The project was kept underwraps from the rest of the business and was completed over a matter of weeks. The feedback from within in the business, especially those that have seen the theatre over years, has been brilliant. Whilst our 'regulars' haven't stopped praising the updates, noting that it's now a space to spend time and relax.

Our new feature gallery wall showcasing the amazing shows that have graced the SkyCity Theatre stage over the last 25 years. We had 25 years of show posters rolled up backstage, so this project was very fun to choose a great mix and unveil.

This was once a plain, forgotten walkway and is now a space where patrons can sit and spend time.

Adding in new furniture with mixes of textures and colours has created a space where patrons can now relax with a drink pre-show. Prior to this update our foyer had minimal furniture, so we've now created zones where customers can gather in small or large groups pre-show and during intermissions.

With some coats of neutral paint we've created a light, fresh feeling. Prior to the update, the walls of the theatre were red (imagine, with the carpet!) and working with the existing mix of textures was part of the challenge.
SkyCity Theatre Hobson Street entry was updated quickly and easily but with a massive impact. This space prior was completely unmarked and given it's location, felt like a dark back-door entry. By changing the lightbulbs and adding some signage and decals to the doors and windows, we've managed to bring the space to life for our patrons.
