Smoke And Sound

Smoke & Sound stands for something elusive - a force that cannot be contained. The photobook is my attempt at capturing and examining the intimacy shared between two people. I understand now that curating this album was my way of dealing with the impermanence of human states. As a storyteller, I felt desperate to find the right tool to accurately extract the emotional evolution of a newly formed relationship. The portraits were taken over the course of a couple of years. Designing the book with Laxmi Owczarek was for me another chance of examining the story I set myself to capture. The idea of layout and sequencing was shifting and transforming for some time. Our dialogue around the theme of the photographs helped us in solidifying the core of the narrative.
ABOUT THE DESIGN

'Smoke and Sound' explores its core themes through different elements such as the layout, structure and colour. I thought of 'Smoke and Sound' as if they were a person, which inspired the narrative. Lack of numbers or transitions between each section creates a smooth journey; as viewer progress, they witness the initial distance between the protagonists disappearing. The concept informs the layouts. The scaling of the photographs encourages the viewer to treat the images with attention to its subtle emotional texture. Once they move onto the next page, the full size photographs reveal the wider context of the scene. This dynamic transitions reflect the progressive and always moving nature of relationships.
