Snakes and Ladders

  • Lily Barton

Snakes and Ladders is a photographic investigation into the covert world of freemasonry. Freemasonry is the oldest fraternal organisation still operating globally. Spread by the advance of the British Empire, masonry stands strong in being one of the largest secretive societies worldwide. They are a brotherhood that stresses the importance of integrity, friendship, respect and charity. Partaking in unknown rituals and learning the meanings behind masonic symbology, masons can climb the degrees of membership. Having close family connections to Freemasonry, I have been granted a unique insight into the organisation. In an exchange of passions, this body of work follows my personal exploration of masonry with the help of my grandfather.
