SOCIALIST MODERNISM

  • Samantha Abraham

Socialist Modernism is an Autumn/Winter 2021 collection for Thom Browne inspired by the style of architecture developed in the Eastern Bloc of the Soviet Union from 1955-1991. The architecture was influenced by space travel and modern technology creating decaying, brutalist structures representing the political climate. These structures are shown through the silhouettes of the garments, using boning to support these interesting elements. Laser cutting and engraving help to show the patterns on the buildings as well as different methods of quilting to portray the texture from the cement buildings. Contrasting the dull grey colours of the architecture, brighter tones are pulled into the colour palette from artwork painted on the buildings as well as rusted aspects. A combination of different wools such as harris herringbone, harris tweed and cashmere help to bring a mixture of texture to the collection as well as super 130s and super 140s for lightweight suits.
