At least one member of this panel thinks so and we quickly realised that this is a good reason to bring this little-discussed element of our creative lives to the fore. We launch into the discussion with few preconceptions of where it will take us, but each bringing questions and suggestions and an open invitation to interested people to bring your thoughts into the mix. We don’t expect to reach firm conclusions, but we will lay the foundations for the discussions that follow as we build a series to lead us there. We will explore the humanity of the photographic medium, exploring how our undefined expectations are expressed in the imagery we work with and how in return the imagery shapes us in ways beyond the immediately visible. And as artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important part in today’s visual environment it behooves us to consider the possibility that there really might be a ghost in the machine that combined with its intelligence might open the doors of perception in hitherto unimagined ways.
