Stasis

  • Theo Deproost

Stasis explores the social and cultural experience of the Covid-19 pandemic. Each object in the series represents an industry, event or activity that has been drastically affected by the pandemic over the last two years, including sports, travel, work, weddings and live performance. The short-term impact of Covid-19 has been obvious, but the long-term damage to our lives and wider culture is, as yet, unclear. Hundreds of businesses, both small and large, have been either financially crippled or destroyed; actors, musicians and many other performers have been without an audience and urged to ‘re-train’; we have experienced many of our most poignant life events (including births, weddings and funerals) without the usual support of family and friends; we have learned, over time, to become wary of large groups, face-to-face interaction and even hugging a close friend or relative. The crystallisation of the objects in Stasis represents the impact the pandemic is having on our lives over time - weighing us down, making cumbersome what was delicate and beautiful, creating stasis where there was movement and life.
