Self-initiated, editorial, experience

The brief:

This is a self-initiated project and has a personal meaning to me. Through this project I aim to communicate the insight into one of the most isolated and oppressed countries in the world. The name of the country is left out intentionally.

Design outcome:

I have created a publication with information about this country with an aim to tell people that this is still happening in the world. I have chosen to do this project in partnership with Amnesty International, as they have done a big amount of research on human rights and issues like isolation, torture, etc. The book is screenprinted with UV inks on a book that I have bought in a book shop ‘The Interrogative Mood’ by Padgett Powell. It communicates the secrecy, isolation, fear. In summary, the original book is a thought provoking novel that makes the reader feel challenged and put on the spot. The typography in my design is bold and claustrophobic. I am also aiming to create an experience design for this project.
For the experience part of the project, I have created a model of an installation. It consists of 4 rooms, each concentrating on an exaggerated factor of living in an isolated country - sound of a tracked phone, blocked websites, being watched and filmed and the last room is for reading the publication in the dark. Each room is completely white but once the lights are off, secret UV messaging appears on walls just like in the publication. This experience is aimed to show what it is like live in an oppressed country, to exaggerate the feeling of fear, isolation and vulnerability.
