Stillness: A Novel

  • Jo Millett

A collection of stories from the perspective of Death. Ranging from horror to philosophy, from grief to joy. The first of these stories will be published as part of the third issue of Rooted Magazine.

Elodie would always stop to look at the tree for a while on her way to school. It is an old, gnarled thing the size of a house that stands right outside the school chapel. Following the lines in the ancient bark seems to disconnect her from the world, to draw her in. Today is no different. Elodie traces the familiar paths with her eyes, the swirls that unfurl into branching patterns that make Elodie’s heart race where they end, because part of her knows that the paths should go much further, much deeper than that. She checks her watch to see that it is already ten to nine and moves at quite a pace to the chapel doors. How had she not heard the bell?
