Stories brought to life for partially sighted children

  • Phoebe Walters

The aim of this project is to bring Roald Dahl stories to life, through a sensory bedtime story experience. I have created an animated sequence using light and dark 2D shape to create the story of 'The Enormous Crocodile' and bring it to life, using audio alongside it. In order to be inclusive all round, and not solely place all focus on the child that is partially sighted, I designed a typographic book that is aimed at entertaining both the parents of the children, and other children they may have.

Penguin Random House have an existing collaboration with RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) and I felt that this could be further developed.

This project's aims were to allow children that are partially sighted, to feel as though they aren't missing out on the classic children's stories that are often always so readily available for children of whom don't have these sight disabilities.
From the beginning The Enormous Crocodile is dominating the pages, with scale and intimidating boldness.
Throughout type detailing and experimentation, in order to show difference between the nice characters and the horrid greedy croc, typefaces, scale, placement and shades of grey were thought about. Using a bold condensed typeface in all capitals for The Enormous Crocodile just seems fitting to his overbearing character, whilst alongisde this in conversation with the many other animals he encounters, thier speech is presented through a serif typeface, in a lighter dark grey to present a more innocent feeling.
In the above image, this is a scene when The Roly-Poly Bird is singing away asking The Enormous Crocodile questions, and tying to work out exactly what it is the horrid croc wants so badly for his lunch.
Here The Enormous Crocodile still takes over the spread with intimidation whilst being on the ground speaking up to the monkey in the tree.
When the time comes for The Enormous Crocodile to begin his secret plans and clever tricks, he is thinking and speaking aloud to himself, so with this began the challenge of presenting a horrid greedy enormous characters' thoughts.
Here scaled up incredibly bold speech marks encompass The Enormous Crocodile's first thought.
