Story-telling Pizza

  • Katherine Dixon

During my second year at Middlesex University, we took part in the 2020 Retail-Expo design competition. We were tasked with designing a kiosk for Pizza Express which had a grab and go concept. The kiosk was to be in a travel hub and targeted commuters as their target market audience. To create the final design I researched the history of Pizza Express, the company’s values and their existing restaurants. Also relevant case studies, I was highly inspired by the Cos pop-up shop by Gary Card, the Roaming Market by Aberrant Architecture and paintings by Piet Mondrian.

To keep the project to the existing Pizza Express brand,  the iconic black and white stripe and blue colour were incorporated into my design. One natural material will be used throughout. The kiosk can adapt to each location through the usage of pattern, and the time of day through movable walls.

Through research the history of both stations I selected information which I found interesting and created patterns based off of the selections. For Kings Cross Station the patterns are based on Harry Potter, Queen Boudica and the stations design relation to a Moscow riding school. For St.Pancras Station the patterns relate to the milk trade and the story of the broken station clock
