Strata

  • Claire Newman-Williams
The images in "Strata" are produced with a selection of cameras and processes ranging from nineteenth century wet plate techniques and antique film cameras, to plastic cameras and an iphone. These photographs are layered with text and other found images before the resulting archival giclée prints are mounted on antique book covers.

At the heart of my work is the richness and complexity of memory. By using old books and the inscriptions that other generations have left behind as the background to my images, I build up a story using layers of recalled experience and nostalgia. It is not a linear narrative though. In my work there is no beginning, no middle, no end, unless the viewer chooses to impose it.
