Formed in April 2016, STUDIO49 is a mobile games studio located in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Comprised of a hand-picked team of international misfits, developers, artists, designers and luminaries, the company required a logo.
Capitalizing upon valued themes of diversity as strength, unified effort, I began thinking of the logo as a sort of puzzle... the sum of its parts forming definitive, mighty numerals. To realize this idea, I built six-foot bespoke wooden numbers from scraps I found in the office courtyard. When complete, this hand-crafted exploration was mounted as permanent lobby signage.
After digitally recreating these pieces, I then randomly colourized them according to a pre-established palette, ordered them in sequential layers, and animated them to gradually build a 49.
Referred to as the 'Build' logo, this apt term is also synonymous amongst development teams when referring to a stable version of a game or project.
