My final major project looks at the current state of the world’s oceans through an abstract textural perspective and macro photography. The title for my project ‘Sublime’, was chosen in reference to the literary meaning of ‘sublime’ as described by Edmund Burke (1756) which I felt perfectly summarised the relationship between the terrible reality of modern oceans and their beauty, addressed within the project. As Burke describes “When danger or pain press too nearly, they are incapable of giving any delight, and are simply terrible; but at certain distances, and with certain modi cations, they may be, and they are delightful” (Burke 1756) this book offers such ‘modification’ or distance through its abstract textural eye and exposes beauty tangled with devastation.
