Surf Era, Berlin

  • Chris Carty

Feasibility study for an Urban Surf School. A team of entrepreneurs in Germany hope to bring a wave pool called SURF ERA to the Berlin area. The 15-acre facility centered around a 5-acre wave pool will produce waves suitable for beginners, practicing professionals and everyone in between. If the plan is successful, SURF ERA would be the first sustainable, emission neutral and translucent-roofed surf park in the world. A transparent, retractable, ETFE roof enables year-round operation, guaranteeing a pleasant and authentic atmosphere for all weather conditions. The design utilises an adaptable modular system deliverable in incremental phases to ensure maximum flexibility. The scheme has net-zero carbon aspirations, aiming to produce waves using renewable energy on-site. Design team: Adrian Timmins, Helen Siu, Chris Carty Engineers: Schlaich Bergermann Partner
