The BBC Pandemic app

  • Harrison Kelly

In 2017, I co-ordinated the launch of the BBC Pandemic app, as part of a citizen science experiment for a science documentary. The project was produced by 360 Production Ltd, in partnership with the University of Cambridge and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, app developers Big Motive, and was commissioned by BBC Four. The project required me to conduct a marketing and social media campaign, without any BBC branding, meaning I had to build a huge network of science institutions, influencers, and social media agencies who would share the digital assets we had produced. Nevertheless, the app received 100k+ downloads, and set a new gold standard in collecting travel and contact data, to be used by public health modelling and pandemic preparedness.
