The Bug That Didn't Bite

‘The Bug That Didn’t Bite’ is a tabloid newspaper inspired by The Y2K Millennium Bug. ‘The Significance of Numbers’ was a brief set by ISTD, and my project demonstrates the impact that this change of date from 99 to 00 on computers (on the last day of 1999) had on the world leading up to the event. This project is quite personal, as to me, the notion of this seems ridiculous to me that is caused so much panic and created so much hysteria, because of the digital world that I have grown up in. I wanted to demonstrate this idea, through imitating the insanely dramatic newspaper headlines by recreating my own newspaper about the event, to highlight the absurdity and expose the media and its tendency to cause unnecessary panic and hysteria. I collected a number of different articles from all over the world leading up to the event to do this. The newspaper also has an insert, created using more headlines. This is another typographic exploration of the Y2K Bug with a more playful, modern outlook, in order to expose and ridicule the notion even further.
