The Coffee Monk

  • Arif Tariq
The Coffee Monk, the name and the icon were both inspired by the earliest cultivation's of coffee at the southern end of the Red sea – Yemen and Ethiopia.
Within Yemeni monasteries Coffee was drunk by Sufi mystics as an aid to concentration and even spiritual intoxication whilst they invoked the name of God. Historically known Sufi’s perform physical meditation by rotating around this is also called Whirling. This Whirling has inspired me to create the icon as I’ve tried to capture the Sufi whirling from a bird’s eye view.
