THE DIASPORIC GRAND-DAUGHTER /dʌɪˈasp(ə)rə/

  • RIAH BENT-STEDFORD

This project is an exploration of the Jamaican Diaspora I was born out of. Jamaica and Diaspora are cultures that represent the duality of conservatism by liberating Jamaican culture in the mass dispersion of the Jamaican population. The influence of my grandparents are the markers that separate the past, and the diasporic present serves as a blend of what makes me the individual I am today. The past of culture and identity expands representation by offering a voice that grows attention to the authentic narratives of storytelling in a world that seems more dreamlike than reality. I will help to showcase a distinctive thread that speaks on current affairs, diaspora, content that lacks representation and unconventional beauty that allows my self-confidence or self-awareness to shine through my creative outcomes as anchors to my reality.
