The Economist x Alexis Tsegba

Shining a light on the many nuances of daily discrimination inflicted upon women of colour, Alexis Chivir-ter Tsegba created these powerful artworks to accompany an article in The Economist that explores the price of having black hair in a white world. From the anxiety and embarrassment experienced at failing the ‘comb test’ to the disapproval and policing of natural hairstyles within corporate and professional spaces, the piece explores the lifecycle of trauma inducing events experienced by Black women on a universal scale and how embracing natural hairstyles often comes at great personal and/or professional cost.
