The Global Minimum Wage - Editorial Project

  • Will Roach

The project was done in collaboration with some environmental science students. My task was to design a publication based around an idea for how China could reduce its carbon emissions. Our group settled on the bold idea of creating a global minimum wage to increase the cost of low wage factories leading to a reduced number of factories and fewer carbon emissions. My publication focuses on informing people in positions of power such as CEO's and government leaders and to bridge the gap between those at the top and bottom of industries. Each note informs the reader about a specific person and how the new minimum wage will benefit them.

Envelope

The envelope features gold foil embossed onto G.F. Smiths Bright Red Colourplan paper featuring patterns derived from the yin and yang symbol representing equality. In China, similar envelopes containing money are given as gifts during various celebrations.

I wanted the envelope to stand out dramatically if it were to be sent out to ensure it was read carefully and not quickly discarded by those receiving it.

Currency Strap

Within the envelope, the money is held in this strap which contains a broader summary of what the minimum wage will do. This gives readers an idea of how this will affect the world as a whole as well as help people on a personal level.

Notes

On one side of the note, there is an image of where the subject works, their current wage and what country they are from. The reverse has an image of them, their new wage, as well as details about this helps them. This aims to change perceptions of the subject as just a worker to a human being. Thus creating a more personal connection with the reader while also showing them the dramatic changes being introduced.
