The Habitual Performed

  • Laura Shrimpton
Inspired by Georges Perec’s Infra Ordinary, the work is an exploration of the habitual materials, forms and patterns that contribute to the rhythms and space of everyday life. By interrupting the usual application and context in which they would be found, it challenges common understanding and expectations of how the habitual should behave. It plays with tactility, surface and illusion of material to encourage a desire of touch and interaction. Through this encounter, the work encourages a heightened awareness of environment, material and self.

In turn, it responds to and challenges Perec’s notion that ‘we sleep through our lives in a dreamless sleep’, by creating unexpected juxtapositions that asks for one’s full attention to wholly understand them.
