A three minute sequence from the Documentary; The Open Waves. Made for TV304 at Falmouth University. The documentary explored PTSD in veterans. Even without a physical injury, many veterans experience mild to severe cases of PTSD. PTSD can create unhealthy coping habits e.g. drinking and drugs, not only this but it creates daily dysfunction to the individual, effecting quality or life and wellbeing. Studies have been done into the effect that nature-based therapy, or in this instance surfing and the effect it can have on veterans suffering from PTSD and depression, the study concluded that it can reduce feelings of stress, reduce anger and give a feeling of calm. Dave ‘Paddy’ Corcoran spent 16 in the Royal Marines and after serving for 16 years, Paddy sustained near-fatal injuries. This is the story of his continuing journey through recovery, from the Physical and Mental injuries that he was left with, and how Paddy has found a sense of peace and purpose through surfing and the ocean. This documentary will show the emotion of his story, from the day he was shot until the present. Looking at the peaks and troughs through this journey as well as his darkest thoughts. This story is intended to inspire others, that even in their darkest moments they are not alone and convey the healing power of conversation and the ocean. Due to COVID-19 this documentry was halted during production and was unable to finish, but we were still able to create and cut this sequence.
