THE PATHOLOGY OF MAN

  • Lauren Broxton

Following a report by the American Psychological Association, a report was published that informed new guidelines of how men and boys should be treated, which arguably treats masculinity as a problem that must be cured. Traits such as stoicism, aggression, dominance and competitiveness are allegedly to blame for a host of social problems. This project starts from another point of reference of traditional masculine figures - leathermen - drawing inspiration from Robert Mapplethorpe's fetish subjects and juxtaposed with the contorted form of shellshocked patients - the embodiment of male hysteria.
