The Pink House Gardens

  • Zara James

This project is my 3rd Year Final Major Project. A collection of floral designs, inspired by the florals in my garden from when I was a child. The designs are paintings that are digitally composed, into repeats for wallpaper and fabric. I have painted the florals using gouache, from a range of sources, including photographs from the gardens I have visited and from florals I have collected. The florals are typically seen in British gardens. I have collected an initial body of research that includes photographs and drawings that have developed into paintings and designs. This collection show's the painted quality of the florals. I wanted the designs to look like they have been painted straight onto the wall or cloth. I find myself being drawn to colour when I am researching and designing, and I love that this collection is bright and colourful as the gardens at the peak of summer. After visiting the National Botanical Gardens of Wales and the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam, I realized that the best inspiration came from the gardens around me and the local Garden Centre. Gardens bring back so many memories for me and nostalgia, making this project especially special.
