‘The Porcelain Chronicle’ is a newspaper created to celebrate Latrinalia, and shows how seemingly unconnected people and places from around the world can all be brought together by looking into the graffiti on a toilet wall. As Rough Trade Records was founded in 1978, the newspaper is a 40th Anniversary Edition.
To gain a full understanding of the toilet graffiti, I had to make an archive of all Latrinalia present, and recorded all illustrations, political topics and bands mentioned on the walls.
For the brand to stand out, I created a typeface out of shapes formed inside my toilet symbol logo. Due to Rough Trade’s musical background, I have created the man and woman to look like they are dancing, which also helps with letter formation. Inspired by post-punk aesthetic, the letters are degraded and half-toned, which give an overall grungy nature.
For the content of the newspaper, I messaged interview questions to all of the bands that I could find written in the graffiti, and their responses make up most of the content. I also have included relevant articles to world issues discussed in the Latrinalia.
