The Rocking Bench

Competition winning bench design for the London Festival of Architecture and the Royal Docks Team

In September of 2020, the Rocking Bench was one of five designs to be selected by the LFA for their second annual Pews and Perches competition, which brings benches designed by young architects and designers to the Royal Docks in London. The Rocking Bench deals with the impact of COVID on the use of our public spaces and interaction with others by creating a connection through movement while keeping users two metres apart. The gentle rocking movement is like that of a see-saw and is inspired itself by the beam scales used to weigh imported goods in the docklands in the past.
