This is a collaborative project between Joshua James and Eleanor Ruth Hodgson in which this was an external collaboration with The Sage Gateshead. The brief was to create a series of posters which would captivate and engage a younger audience. We wanted to combine two key elements which we believed were central to this Jazz Festival: location (Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside) and the jazz musicians at the event. We sourced our inspiration from local club posters and used that as a launch ground. We took contemporary fonts and printed them out on paper in order to place them in a bathtub to let the water distort the text for us to photograph. With these images we played around with vibrant colours. We wanted this to reflect upon the improvisation and the colourful nature while also echoing its modern influence on club music.
