THE SKILL-EXCHANGE

  • Iga Wlodarczyk
An independent community where value is placed on skill and well being rather then the materialistic .
The idea is rooted in the simplest human urges, William Golding lived in Salisbury whilst writing the lord of the flies, being inspired by the boys he taught at school. At an allegorical level, the theme of the book is the conflicting human impulses toward civilization and social organization and toward the will of power. The project aims to draw upon this idea in creating an ‘independent republic’ where the somewhat conflicting ideals of groupthink mentality and individuality will meet and be allowed to blossom together. The social project will center around social clashes, focusing on the young and elderly living together to benefit each other. The simple idea is that the elderly who lived in different times will pass on their now dying trades to the younger generation. This way the larger community can benefit form a ‘fix rather then buy new’ scheme. Where the consumer cycle could be broken, providing the community with a more sustainable ‘ retail park,”
The site in itself will also focus on community projects with schools and farmers to educate the younger generations about healthy sustainable and happy living. Encouraging children from deprived metropolitan areas, who otherwise might not have such opportunity to actively enjoy their time in the ‘countryside as well as running an on site ‘unschooling’ day center where the elderly will also be encouraged to participate in.’
