The Stations of the Cross
Hardcover art book - design and layout I had the privilege working again with renowned British artist and painter, Alice Sielle on her second title.
The result?
A bespoke (300x300mm) art book printed on Munken Pure Cream 150gsm, uncoated paper to closely match the digitally reproduced linocut images with the original ones. The exquisite inner pages were enclosed in between black wibalin hardcovers embossed with silver foiling. For protection, the book was dressed in a black, paper dustjacket - sourced from G F Smith, and the hardcover’s embossed silver motif was repeated for a unique look.
The cultural challenge?
It is always difficult to depict any religious theme, but it is even more challenging to find specific visual references summarising the theme itself. When the cover design was first conceptualised, the issue was to find a the perfect symbol to carry the message of the book. We managed to overcome this with the help of Reverend Brian Ralph.
The physical challenge?
The book was made under similar circumstances to Sielle’s first book - everything was orchestrated via the internet. Book design, layout and printing are not for the faint hearted if you manage them remotely. The combination of understanding print, printing materials and methods, the limitations of the project and the support of a reliable printer all contributed to its success.
I hope this book will help St Barnabas Church to continue its remarkable work for the local and diverse community of Bethnal Green, Mile End and Bow.
