I was contacted by a fellow colleague from Clark University to create a piece of artwork to create a cover to augment her podcast, The Upcycled Mentality. The purpose of the podcast was to foster a conversation around creating fashion that is sustainable for both the designer and the Earth.
In response, I created this cover. I broke down the title, Upcycled Mentality into two parts.
The brain that makes up the base of the design, is representative of the mental portion of the title; it highlights the role of the brain of the designer to create work that re-uses existing material in a way that is fashionable.
The arrows pointing up take into account the forward nature of the entire movement. The green patchwork that makes up the brain graphic highlights the sustainable aspect of upcycling: using existing pieces and scraps of clothing to create something new and exciting. The idea of patchwork quilts immediately came to mind when I thought of the title, so I incorporated it into the design.
