The Wild Escape

  • Juliet Alliban

A UK-wide project, inspiring young people to find creatures in art and natural history collections and imagine the creature escaping to a new Wild World, a collective online artwork launched on Earth Day. In the largest ever collaboration with 532 museums, galleries, historic places and over 800 schools across the UK, thousands of young people created art inspired by nature. Funded by Arts Council England. I was tasked with designing this inspiring and unique web experience, using responsive design, art direction and photography. This included the gathering of photographic imagery and cross referencing nature resources to ensure species were native to the UK. Groupings included fungus, algae, moss (such as Bartramia pomiformis), sea weed, trees (oak, sycamore, silver birch etc), wild flowers, natural rock formations found amongst woodland and coastal regions. There are thousands of plants specific to the UK, and it was important to only select plants that were British rather than non-native. The types of plants found amongst freshwater and featured within The Wild Escape include phragmites australis, water crowfoot, water soldiers and bulrush.

Detailed compositions were produced, combining hexagonal base shapes for the ground and individually edited photographic assets to populate the 4 habitats (coastal, freshwater, grassland and woodland). Concepts also included dynamic sky backgrounds, floating and randomised positioning of plants.
Each asset was manipulated and edited in Photoshop to create the edgy, collage look as seen throughout the branding. Detailed references and components were created in Figma. These assets were used to create the online experience, a playful, interactive art tool. As part of the project, I also covered:
  1. Conceptual exploration
  2. Collaborative teamwork
  3. Prototyping and design iterations
  4. Figma UI design system
  5. Iconography
  6. Responsive design
